Motion Tracking with Mocha

If you haven’t already guessed, we’ll be placing the BeemoBoop movie into this phone, as if it’s what’s on-screen. This digital screen replacement is a common practice, since it’s difficult to shoot video of a screen and have it look good in-camera.

Our first step is to track this phone screen. This process converts the movement of the phone into keyframes, so After Effects can then apply the phone’s movement to another layer. For this, we’ll use a plug-in that comes with After Effects, called Mocha AE. Although we’ll have to learn a new piece of software, it’s ultimately the simplest and most effective way to track a flat moving surface.
