A basic, useful, and safe way to design a Web page is to first define a single-cell table, and then place page content inside that cell. Constraining page content in a rectangular table—especially constraining page width using a table—allows you to control the width at which your page displays in a browser. Creating a one-cell table is also a useful way of familiarizing yourself with the basic concepts involved in Web page design with tables.

Layout Mode Is Gone—Expanded Tables Mode Remains

With Dreamweaver CS4, Layout mode has been removed as an option for designing pages with tables, and instead, all tables are created in what was formally called standard mode.
