Chapter 11. Constructing an Interactive Video Host

When Flash Player 8 added the On2 VP6 codec, Flash Video was enhanced by the ability to add transparency to the video image. This transparent area, called an alpha matte or alpha channel, can see through to underlying Flash elements, including Flash text, graphics, or another Flash Video clip.

Alpha channels for video can be created in a number of ways. If you’re outputting a video sequence from a 3D modeling application, you can retain transparency for the background area behind a 3D object in the export settings.
