Longer projects such as books, catalogs, and magazines often consist of multiple InDesign documents, so multiple users can work on different pieces of the project simultaneously. Breaking up these projects into several documents also results in smaller, more manageable documents. If you're working on this type of document, by yourself or in a workgroup, InDesign provides the book feature for managing the document files, updating page numbers across documents, and ensuring consistency in the book.

In InDesign, a book is a special type of file that you create to track multiple documents for yourself or for a workgroup. A book file appears as a panel, and it lists each InDesign document — let's call them chapters to distinguish them from stand-alone documents — that you add to the book. Using these book panels, you can add, open and edit, rearrange, and print chapters of the book.

Note

Books are a natural venue for using the index and table of contents (TOC) features, given you can create a unified index or TOC across all chapters within a book in one fell swoop. Chapter 27 covers how to create indexes and TOCs.
