86 LESSON 5 Editing Video
Working with the Monitor panel
After you organize your clips, drag them into either the Timeline or Sceneline of
the My Project panel. Regardless of which view you choose, you’ll preview your
work in the Monitor panel. e Timeline and Sceneline are diff erent panels for
arranging clips and applying eff ects, and can show diff erent views of the project.
In contrast, the Monitor panel shows one frame of the project, and one frame only.
e displayed frame is at the location of the current-time indicator (
). In the
Sceneline, the current-time indicator is in the mini-timeline just below the preview
area. In the Timeline, the current-time indicator is positioned on the Timeline
itself. More on that when you learn about editing in the Timeline below.
Now let’s explore the functions of the Monitor panel.
1 Select the fi rst clip in the Sceneline, and then click the Play button ( )
in the Monitor panel to begin playback. As the movie is playing, notice that
the timecode in the lower-left corner of the Monitor panel is advancing. To
pause playback, press the spacebar. Or once again click the Play button, which
becomes the Pause button (
) during playback.
Setting up your DV hardware (continued)
3 Turn on your camcorder and set it to the VCR setting.
4 Depending on your TV, you will most likely have to change the Video input to “Video
1” or “Line 1.”
5 Preview a project in Adobe Premiere Elements to make sure you are viewing the
output on your TV set or video monitor.

Previewing in Adobe
Premiere Elements
Adobe Premiere Elements attempts to preview all movies at full frame rate. While
working with the sample DV clips provided in these lessons, you should be able to
preview at full frame rate with any computer that meets the system requirements
as
specifi ed on the retail box, Adobe website, and elsewhere.
However, with high-defi nition formats such as AVCHD and HDV and more advanced
eff ects, preview may slow down considerably, especially on older computers. If this
occurs, check the Adobe Premiere Elements Help fi le, in particular a section entitled
“Render an area for preview.”
