Color Mattes

Let’s dive into Premiere’s graphic features. While Premiere’s design tools aren’t nearly as robust as those in After Effects, we can still utilize some basic tools.

Creating Color Mattes

Premiere’s Color Matte is a basic rectangle that can be any color you want. This is useful for creating colored backgrounds, say for a title sequence.

The two ways we can achieve this are:

  • File > New > Color Matte...
  • New Item icon > Color Matte...

You’ll then be promted to define the dimensions and frame rate of your Color Matte. These settings will default to those of your current sequence, so it’s unlikely you’ll need to change them.
