A3.1 Definitions and Mathematical Representation
In mathematics, the root mean square (abbreviated as “RMS” or “rms”), also known as the quadratic mean, is a statistical measure of the magnitude of a varying quantity. It is especially useful when the variates are positive and negative—for example, sinusoids. RMS is used in various fields, including electrical engineering and optical technology, and especially in the measurement of the optical power for evaluating the optical signal-to-noise ratio (OSNR) in optical transmission systems.
