Information, entropy and its relationship to design

Abstract:

The previous chapter discussed the most important characteristics of the design process. This chapter proposes mathematical definitions for modeling some of those characteristics. It defines the concepts of variable, alphabet, spaces of definition, uncertainty, entropy, mutual information, information content, acceptance margins, tolerances, response margins, and transfer function. The main objectives are to explore the relationships between these concepts, explain the importance of the concepts of entropy and information in the design process, and seek upper bounds for them.
