Appendix A. OSPF Fundamentals

Open Shortest Path First (OSPF) is a protocol standardized in RFC 2328 by the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF). OSPF is a link-state protocol that has many advantages, including low traffic levels during normal operation and rapid convergence.

This appendix will give you a general overview of the protocol rather than a complete understanding of every aspect of OSPF's operation. You should also look at the relevant RFCs published by the IETF and OSPF Network Design Solutions by Thomas M.Thomas II, which is published by Cisco Press.
