8.1 Introduction
In the class of axisymmetrically loaded members, the fundamental problem may be defined in terms of the radial coordinate. There are numerous practical situations in which the distribution of stress manifests as symmetry about an axis. Examples include pressure vessels, compound cylinders, clad reactor elements, chemical reaction vessels, heat exchanger tubes, solid or hollow spherical structures, turbine disks, and components of many other machines used in settings from aerospace to households.
