Chapter 4. Virtual Private Networks

This chapter covers the following topics:

  • Overview of VPNs—Virtual Private Networks identify closed user groups over a common network infrastructure. This section examines and compares TDM, X.25, Frame Relay, SMDS, and ATM services. It also discusses private IP VPNs.

  • Connection-oriented VPNs—Connection-oriented VPNs can be built on Layer 2 or Layer 3 infrastructures. This section discusses Layer 2 VPNs built using connection-oriented point-to-point overlays such as Frame Relay and ATM virtual connections. It also discusses Layer 3 connection-oriented VPNs such as Generic Route Encapsulation and IP Security.
