Abstract
This chapter introduces the principles and algorithms for estimating downward surface shortwave radiation and photosynthetically active radiation (PAR) from remotely sensed data. The advantages and disadvantages of the existing algorithms are also briefly discussed. Section 5.1 briefly introduces basic concepts, such as the solar radiation spectrum, solar constant, and shortwave radiation and PAR. Section 5.2 presents the current observation networks of global solar radiation, including global energy balance archive, baseline surface radiation network, surface radiation budget network, and FLUXNET.
