8.3. Surface net longwave radiation
Surface net longwave radiation (SNLR) is the difference between the surface downward and upwelling longwave radiation. SNLR is dominated by longwave radiation at night and at most times of the year in the polar regions. SNLR is an important part of radiant energy balance, and its accurate estimation is of great significance to weather forecast, climate simulation, and land surface process simulation results. This section will introduce the estimation of the SNLR under clear-sky conditions and the SNLR under cloudy conditions.
