Canopy biochemical characteristics

Abstract

Plants contain biochemicals such as chlorophyll, water, protein, lignin, and cellulose. The accurate estimation of biochemical concentrations in vegetation canopies is important to understanding ecosystem functions on different scales. This chapter introduces methods and models for the extraction of plant biochemical parameters using remote sensing. Section 9.1 reviews the principles and methods of extracting plant biochemical concentrations using remote sensing. Section 9.2 describes the empirical and semiempirical extraction methods that provide the many different types of experimental data used to extract biochemical concentrations on the leaf and canopy scales.
