Vegetation height and vertical structure

Abstract

Vegetation height and vertical structure are important ecosystem parameters because they are highly correlated with the ecological functions and biodiversity of the ecosystem. This chapter addresses the applications of synthetic-aperture radar (SAR) and light detection and ranging (lidar) in the estimation of vegetation height and vertical structures. The first section introduces the field measurement methods. According to the size of footprint, the lidar data can be divided into two categories, i.e., small footprint and large footprint lidars.
