14.2. Allometric methods
Traditional techniques based on field measurement include destructive sampling methods and nondestructive allometric equations. Destructive sampling of many trees of the dominating species at each site is extremely tedious and not always practical, thus allometric method is practically used.
The basic principle of the allometric equations is that in many organisms, the growth rate of one part of the organism is proportional to that of another. For example, the trunk diameter of a tree is highly correlated with trunk weight. If a range of tree sizes is measured, a regression equation can be derived for predicting tree weight.
