Risks of Extreme Events in Complex Queuing Systems
12.1 Introduction
This chapter formulates the measurement of the risk of extreme latencies for various classes of entities in priority systems (PS). The first section investigates the conditions for the occurrence of extreme latencies, namely, the arrival and service rates of entities. The second section describes a basis for the measurement of risk in PS by defining nonexceedance probabilities of latency times. Latency thresholds are defined for each of the classes in a PS to identify the level of latency times wherein unnecessary cost is incurred, and the reliability of the PS is affected. The last section summarizes the contributions of this chapter to the book.
