CHAPTER 1AN OVERVIEW OF ANSI/ASSP Z10.0-2019 AND ANSI/ASSP/ISO 45001-2018
In 2019, the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) approved a third edition of a standard titled Occupational Health and Safety Management Systems. Its secretariat is the American Society of Safety Professionals (ASSP), and its designation is ANSI/ASSP Z10.0-2019. This American standard was first approved in 2005, revised in 2012, and reaffirmed in 2017. It is commonly referred to as Z10.
Major improvements and extensions were made in the 2019 version. It is a much-improved standard. Revisions are as follows:
- Make it easier to integrate the standard with quality, environmental, and other management systems standards.
- Provide alignment with the 45001standard.
- Are more specific concerning the significance of management leadership and the culture that management creates.
- Encourage additional worker involvement in the safety and health management system.
- Replace the term “employee” with “worker” to broaden the coverage and include certain workers that are not employed by the organization.
- Add a new section on the Context of the Organization.
- Create a new section on Support which includes resources, education, training and competence, communication, and document control process.
- Extend the importance of the design requirements in which prevention through design components are now more prominent.
