Abstract

In this article I trace the evolution in my thinking about motivation and the development of an attribution theory of motivation and emotion. This history includes positive reactions toward and negative reactions against the achievement motivation theory proposed by my mentor, John Atkinson. In a similar manner, the attribution approach was directed by and contradicts Julian Rotter's concept of locus of control.
