Advances in the finishing of silk fabrics
A.K.R. Choudhury Gargi Memorial Institute of Technology, Kolkata, India
Abstract
Silk, the queen of textile fibers, possesses excellent properties and requires little finish. Classical but limited finishes have been applied on silk for a long time. However, with the diversified use of silk and stiff competition from other fibers, silk processors have been forced to look into newer finishes. This chapter discusses various mechanical finishes (e.g., calendering, decatizing, breaking, tamponing, etc.) and chemical finishes (e.g., weighting, crease-recovery, water, oil and fire retardancy, antimicrobial, anti-static finishes) that can be used on silk.
