IBM: Being Essential, Transforming, and Getting Your Skills On

As industries are transformed, reshaped, and interrupted, new jobs are being created that require different approaches to education, training, and hiring. Today’s new roles necessitate a blended integration of domain knowledge, as well as digital, business, and soft skills—all areas of increasing importance (Eikenberg 2018). In fact, a recent LinkedIn study found 57 percent of leaders felt soft skills were more important than hard skills (Lewis 2019), which is concerning as recruiters are seeing a widening skills gap among job applicants, which may indicate an under appreciation of how critical these people skills are to business.
