Turbulence and stochastic processes
Abstract
This chapter discusses the stochastic nature of turbulence and the sound fields produced by the interaction of a generic surface with a turbulent flow. The generation of turbulence at the largest scales, the energy cascade and dissipation are described, and the Reynolds averaged Navier Stokes (RANS) equations are introduced including the concept of a turbulence model. Computational methods based on these concepts are discussed, outlining a range of methods for computing turbulent flows including RANS, unsteady Reynolds averaged Navier Stokes, large eddy simulation, and direct navier stokes.
