Chapter 16. Complex Projects

As your projects become more ambitious, their structures will grow increasingly complex as well. After Effects includes several features that help you create complex projects without resorting to complicated procedures.

A typical project contains not only layers created from individual footage items, but also layers created from other compositions—nested compositions. Nesting comps makes it possible to group elements and to arrange them into a hierarchical structure, creating effects you couldn’t achieve otherwise. You can survey the project’s structure in a flowchart view, and step through the hierarchy of nested comps using navigational tools new in After Effects CS4.
