What is it?

It’s working alongside someone to find out exactly what he does and how he does it.

Why do it?

There’s no better way of understanding customers, their work practises and behaviours, and the environment than doing it firsthand. This is similar to contextual inquiry, except instead of being the inquirer, you’re actually doing the task yourself.

When to do it?

This is most suitable for complex Web or desktop applications. Do this at the beginning of the project to gain an in-depth understanding of the customer and the tasks.
