The concept of MRP is well understood in manufacturing and in other business areas, where it is called ERP (Enterprise Resource Planning). Succinctly, MRP is a planning mechanism that ensures the right things are in the right place at the right time to ensure the smooth flow of production. Although the concepts of MRP have been transferred to other areas of business, such as supply chain management, the method hasn't been used in software development. However, with an Agile software development model that seeks to track the flow of value through a series of transforming steps, the use of MRP methods becomes both useful and practical.
