1 A traditional method is defined by Highsmith [2002] as a Rigorous Software Methodology (RSM). This definition is used here.
The software development lifecycle, or SDLC, is based on the theory of structured methods and is considered the traditional software methodology. It involves distinct phases and gates in which the entire inventory for a project is processed through each phase and then approved through a gate before being released into the next stage, as in Figure 19-1.
