The Facilitator’s Role

Process is about how the group is talking. Content is what people are talking about. As the retrospective leader, you’re responsible for the process. The group is responsible for the content. Maintaining this distinction helps the team trust that the leader is neutral and serves the group.

When we talk about processes, we don’t mean a heavyweight methodology. Group processes include activities, techniques, methods, exercises, or any means of participation that help the group work together in a meeting or event.

Guiding the process means managing activities, time, and yourself (The Skilled Facilitator [Sch94]).
