Huang Jie showed up for the interview, not knowing what to expect. As an elected official in Kaohsiung City in southern Taiwan, she was no stranger to the probing questions of journalists. But nothing could have prepared her for the revelation that awaited her.

The interviewer came straight to the point: Huang Jie's identity had been stolen, her face swapped into a deep-fake AI porn video for profit. They asked for her consent to show her the video. She agreed.

But mere seconds in, she recoiled in horror. “While viewing it, I got very angry at first, then felt very disgusted and nauseated and almost threw up,” she said. “It is a sexual assault on women.”

It was not her first experience with online sexual harassment. The young woman politician often received obscene photos or vile messages on her Facebook page. But she never imagined she would end up starring in a deep-fake AI porn flick. The online harassment she routinely faced now seemed almost benign compared to this grotesque violation.
