Chapter 1. AI at Work: Piecemeal Deployment
Artificial intelligence (AI) in business settings represents a serious technological breakthrough. Its significant impact on business performance cannot be overstated. But AI is also one of the most misunderstood of all business driving tools. In 2019, PwC analysts noted that while “most executives know that AI has the power to change almost everything about the way they do business,” most don’t know how to deploy it “not just in a pilot here or there, but throughout the organization, where it can create maximum value.”
Yet AI deployments gained momentum. Commercial vendors contributed to the upswing with software products and services containing AI-aided functionality or platforms for AI deployment. The advent of more accessible tools dropped the barrier of entry and helped make AI deployments more common. In 2019, Deloitte found that, of the companies using AI at the time, 70% obtained AI capabilities through cloud-based software and services. Further, 65% created AI applications using cloud-based AI development tools and services.
According to recent IDC research, “Software is the largest AI technology group delivering roughly 80% of all AI revenue.” AI applications are the top source of software revenue at $120.4 billion in 2020. AI software platforms are the source of the remaining $4.3 billion.
