Finding Balance + Telling Better Stories
The world is erratic; AI is erratic; and humans are erratic. We are living in a world of accelerating instability. How do we approach it with open-mindedness, flexibility, and curiosity? These days we're moving so quickly it may feel like the world is spinning off its axis. What will be our new true north, allowing us to navigate it all and stay grounded? “Find your balance,” is often called out to us in yoga class when moving into tree pose—a standing pose that requires focus, stability, and grounding. By rooting down through one foot and with arms extended overhead like branches reaching for the sky, you work to mimic the strength and stability of a tree's roots (if all goes as planned and you don't topple over). So, how can we cultivate a sense of grounding that extends beyond our yoga mats?
Spotting is a technique used by dancers to fix their gaze on a specific point as they turn, allowing them to maintain their balance and keep from getting too dizzy. Similarly, we too must become better future-spotters by identifying the focal points that serve as anchors amidst the whirlwind of distractions and changes we face.
Finding grounding, more broadly, will depend on the stories we tell about the future. We must all tell better stories … and become better storytellers. Often, AI is portrayed in extreme ways—either as a savior or as a threat. It's utopian vs. dystopian. Panacea vs. destroyer. Game-changer ...
