APPENDIX B TURING AND COMPUTING: A TIMELINE

Below is a chronology of computer-related events in the period that Alan Turing (AMT) spent at NPL and at Manchester, 1945–54. This timeline has mostly been compiled from information in the first edition of Andrew Hodges’ excellent biography Alan Turing: the Enigma, published by Burnett Books in 1983. Supplementary data on the Pilot ACE project has been taken from Turing’s Legacy: a history of computing at the National Physical Laboratory, 1945–1995, by D M Yates, published by the Science Museum in 1997. Finally, additional information on Turing’s time at Manchester comes from personal contact with the survivors of that period.
