Chapter 1

1. Alignment was first introduced into the lexicon of organization and management in the 1960s by a group of organization scholars including Jay Lorsch and his colleague, Paul Lawrence (Organization and Environment [Boston: Harvard Business School Press, 1967]). It was introduced to a broader management audience in 1982 by Thomas J. Peters and Robert H. Waterman, Jr., in In Search of Excellence: Lessons from America’s Best-Run Companies (New York: Harper & Row, 1982).
