Introduction to Data Transformation Services

Data Transformation Services is more commonly known as DTS. It is SQL Server's tool for importing, exporting, and transforming data. In addition to its ability to transfer data, DTS is also capable of transferring indexes, triggers, rules, defaults, constraints, views, stored procedures, and user-defined data types.

When using DTS, you can either run the wizard to perform an isolated import or export, or you can save the import or export specification as a package. A package contains collections of connections, DTS tasks, DTS transformations, and workflow constraints. It is made up of one or more steps that DTS executes when it runs the package.
