Slightly twisted ideas simply and clearly presented
distinguish the work of the London design group Big Active.
Now they are pushing the idea of what a design studio can be
by managing illustrators and photographers and developing
their own mainstream product lines.

Bleachin’, record sleeve (above) Bleachin’ is Jamaican slang for partying without
sleep. “The album’s lyrical theme centers around a fictional hedonistic jetsetter
known as ‘Bleach,’ who lives the international luxury party lifestyle, existing only
on a high-octane diet of disco powders, pills, and erotica. We made all of the
packaging accessories to his lifestyle: For the limited-edition album we produced
a mirror finish casing that contains a rolled-up bank note. Of course, you could
use the vinyl version for rolling out reefer.”
Simian, record sleeve (right) “The band wanted to do something that had the feeling
of enchanted forests where mythical creatures exist. We remembered a taxidermist
shop in Portobello Road selling weird stuff, such as fish with beaks. If these forest
creatures actually existed they might have ended up exhibited here. Sadly the shop
had closed down, but it reminded Mat Maitland of a series of taxidermy sculptures
called Misfits by the German artist Thomas Grünfeld. Thomas liked our thinking
and enjoyed the music. This campaign is a result of that collaboration. (Beware:
These creatures sneak into your bedroom at night when you’re sleeping!)”
