eanne Cheuk was born and raised in the city of Perth, on the western tip
of Australia. She stuck close to home and attended art school at local
Curtin University. “I went to university to ‘learn’ graphic design, but I can
honestly say that I learned more when I finished.” Cheuk received her degree in
1994. Just 20 years old, she was hired to art-direct the Australian magazine
REVelation. She stayed with REVelation for three years but felt a mounting urge
to do better. In 1997, she struck out on her own and started a design practice
under the name surfacepseudoart. Cheuk wanted independence and knew “that
I knew more about what worked in design than the people I could work for.”
M
U Inspired by Robert M. Pirsig’s 1974 novel Zen and the Art of Motor-
cycle Maintenance and armed with the know-how of having guided
REVelation for the past three years, Cheuk started MU, a global sub-
culture magazine. Turning to writers and photographers in her circle for content,
she ultimately designed and self-published five issues, seeing them distributed
throughout Australia, Britain, the United States, and Malaysia. “MU was my first
magazine, and I started this after working at another magazine for a few years.
I just decided I could do one better on my own—and I did! I asked all my friends
to help me. We didn’t make any money and no one ever got paid, but I learned
so much and made so many great friends through the magazine. I still think it is
one of the greatest things I ever made.”

Back in her native Australia, Deanne Cheuk tapped
the creative energy of her friends and built Mu
a five-issue magazine empire. Then she came to New York
to show the rest of us how it’s done.
