In the last chapter, we paid attention to more complicated multiplication problems; now it's time for more complicated division problems. Again, we'll be making reference back to Chapter 2, “Essential Arithmetic,” investigating some applications of division in daily life, and considering when we want to choose a calculator to help with the work.
Division is the reverse of multiplication. For instance, 2 × 5 = 10; and 10 ÷ 5 = 2. If you can multiply, you can divide. If multiplication is thought of as repeated addition, division can be thought of as repeated subtraction. How many times can you subtract 7 from 83? More than once, certainly. More than 10 times?
