Knowing how to perform the various operations you've learned in earlier chapters in this book is good. Knowing which one to perform in a real-life situation is better. That's why word problems keep coming back. And yes, the situations in word problems don't always sound like real life, but they do give you a chance to practice your skills in context. If you're impatient and want to get to other skills, skip around in this chapter and just make sure that you can set things up before you move on.
