20Rate, Time, and Distance
Most people enjoy travel. They may not be fond of commuting to work or sitting stuck in rush hour traffic, but Americans love to pack up the car and hit the open road or catch a bus, train, or plane. Whether it's a trip to visit family or friends, a vacation getaway, or just to see the world, travel raises three basic questions: (1) how far? (2) how fast? and (3) how long? Here we'll cover how to answer these questions.
1 THE MAGIC FORMULA
One of the greatest formulas of all time is distance = rate × time, or, among the in-crowd, d = r × t. We'll use this formula and its two variations, r = d ÷ t and t = d ÷ r, to solve every problem in this chapter.
