Chapter 14. Apps
In this chapter, I cover the important topic of Analytic Apps. An Analytic App, at its core, is a workflow. The key value in building an app is that, when an app is run, it gives the user a chance to choose values right before it runs. The user’s choices could change which information is used in the workflow, as well as how it’s used, hence making it supremely dynamic. Analytic Apps are one of Alteryx Designer’s most valuable features.
For many, apps are less of a technical topic to learn but more an adventure in rethinking how you present data to fellow coworkers and leaders. Apps shift the focus of the workflow from you as a developer to the end user of your data. You literally need to think in terms of different outcomes. Apps are meant for users to interact with the data that you are providing to get more accurate and relevant information.
As you learn the technical aspects of how Analytic Apps work and how to build them yourself, I challenge you to start thinking about how the user(s) will interact with your app. Don’t just put three Interface tools on top of your workflow and think that you are building an app. Spend time with the users and ask hundreds of questions about what would be great for them. Get their feedback and build it into the app. Your goal isn’t to just build something and walk away. Your goal is always to impact the users in a positive way. Focus on building apps that make their day and, in turn, their lives easier.
