The Future of Process Plant Design
Design tools have changed in the last 20 years, but the core of chemical engineering and design methodology has not. There is a disconnect between practice and theory in chemical and process engineering which inhibits academics from understanding what practitioners need and, consequently, practitioners from taking up academic ideas. This leads me to think that, with respect to methodology, the future of design will be much like the past, until academia can begin to understand what constitutes fitness for purpose.
