Leaders and identity construction

Is it possible for a leader-as-coach to lead or coach people in diverse cultural environments without first having insight into the sociological construction of their own identity? There is little research in the coaching and leadership fields into the importance of self-work in identity construction or identity transition (Butcher, 2012: 119; Bennett, 2017: 89). There is plenty of research on leadership as a constructed identity, but few articles in journals on the value of leaders understanding their own identity construction.
