We have mentioned the complex signal, and have taken note that video falls into this category. Let us now see how this comes about, and what it means to the transmission and measurement of such signals and the standards involved.

The more complex the signal, the more stringent is the process of sending. Generally speaking as the rate of information increases then so do the demands on the circuit. How do we define ‘information rate’? Return again to cable telegraphy based on the battery and lamp circuit. Here, the rate is the operator’s speed in converting the information into a code based on an on/off signal, followed by the reader’s speed in decoding.
