Listed buildings still need approval for alterations and structural repairs under building regulations in the normal way. The regulations apply both to new and existing buildings and they also apply to listed buildings and heritage assets which are occupied. Sometimes however, it can seem impossible to reconcile the requirements of the conservation department to preserve significant fabric and those from building control and in these cases it is often necessary to obtain waivers or derogations (partial exemptions) from normal building regulations standards, with the aid of the conservation officer and building control officer.
