Aalto, Alvar (1898–1976) A Finnish architect–designer best known for his humanistic buildings executed in a modern, organic style (e.g., Viipuri Library, 1927–35 and Paimio Sanitorium, 1929–1933); his furniture, which was made from wood moulded into two-dimensional curves; his curvaceous glass vases; and his textiles.
Anti-Design The name given to the Italian movement of the 1960s and its revival in the 1980s, which set out to disassociate design from commerce and position it within the cultural area. The term ‘radical design’ was used interchangeably. Ettore Sottsass played a key role in the movement from the 1960s onwards.
