16. Constraints Are Good
On developers’ forums and the like, I regularly see people insist that the current version of the software they’re using—Flash, for instance—would be so much better if it had this or that feature. The underlying thought seems to be, If only it had this little widget, then I could really show the world how great I am creatively. Yeah, all I need is the next version and then, wow, look out, world!
But the truth is that more freedom does not necessarily lead to more creativity. In fact, I believe the opposite to be true. Sometimes the more constraints you have to work around, the more you’re forced to deliver a better creative ...
