8Short‐Circuit Currents

8.1 Introduction

In addition to load flow calculations, short‐circuit current calculations are among the basic investigations in the planning of a three‐phase network. Short‐circuit current calculation examines the following network planning parameters:

  • Determination of the dynamic and thermal stress of the equipment
  • Design and adjustment of the mains protection
  • Calculation of the required opening and breaking capacity of the circuit‐breakers
  • Assessment of the type of neutral point treatment
  • Check of the permissible grounding and contact voltages
