22.1 Introduction

A transformer is an alternating current machine, which is equipped with electromagnetic induction of alternating voltage and current between two or more windings with the same frequency and with generally different values of the voltage and the current. It is therefore a device for the transmission and transport of electrical energy. A distinction is made between main transformers (machine transformers) for transforming the generator voltage to the overhead line high voltage and transformer transformers (distribution transformers) between medium voltage network and consumers (local network).
