Social Information Filtering
More than simply allowing us to see profiles of friends, social media has become a primary source for discovering information online. Social media websites dominate the time people spend online, and with that comes a deluge of personal status updates, links to news articles and websites, photos, and videos. Furthermore, on many sites with social elements, like product reviews, user-generated content can be overwhelming. Popular books on Amazon may have hundreds of reviews, as will hotels and restaurants on their respective review sites.
