PREFACE
Ancient Greek philosophy covers roughly a period of about two centuries. The main thinkers who are considered representative of this period are sometimes collectively referred to as the pre-Socratics, as all or most of them lived before Socrates. This chronological title demarcates, in a rough and ready way, those thinkers whom it is convenient to distinguish from Plato and Aristotle, their better-known successors.
Socrates however, in many ways, belongs to the very last lot of thinkers included in this group, for which reason, it is convenient, if clumsy, to refer to this period as Pre-Platonic philosophy.
