Merkel volunteered to help Democratic Awakening, an East German political group formed shortly after the Berlin Wall fell on November 9, 1989, before moving on to Helmut Kohl’s Christian Democratic Union. The party used an image from those early days in a 2007 recruitment poster that referred to her mid-career jump into politics.
